Pitfall Plan by Monica Gelinas

CC4C

As the New Year begins, excitement fills the air with endless possibilities. My family has a cherished tradition that sets the tone for our goals each year: we choose a theme word. This practice not only brings us closer together but also clarifies our personal aspirations across all areas of life.

During our family Zoom calls, we come together, no matter the distance, to dive into discussions about our words. Each member shares their word and the intentions that accompany it. We categorize our goals into different areas, such as mental and relational growth, financial improvement, professional and spiritual development, and emotional wellness.

But amid this excitement, I always ask a vital question: “What might stop us from living out our intentions?” This question leads us to examine potential pitfalls.

Understanding the Concept of Pitfalls

Pitfalls are obstacles that prevent us from achieving our goals. Research shows that around 92% of people fail to keep their New Year's resolutions. Recognizing these pitfalls early can make a significant difference. By identifying challenges ahead of time, we equip ourselves for a higher chance of success.

Instead of waiting for issues to arise, we create a plan to address them proactively. Why wait for setbacks to derail our progress when we can prepare for them?

My Personal Intention for the Year

One of my intentions this year is to dedicate time each week to professional and personal writing, my passion projects that often get pushed aside. I’ve identified one primary pitfall: letting distractions like phone and email notifications intrude on my writing time. For instance, last year, I found myself sacrificing these projects for last-minute requests and interruptions which resulted in a prolonged writing block and disconnect from my “creative” self.

Strategies to Overcome Pitfalls

To tackle this challenge, I’ve devised a three-step solution:

  1. Stay Aware of Distractions: I will accept that distractions will happen, but I won't let them derail my progress.

  2. Treat Writing Time as an Appointment: I will reserve my writing block on my calendar like I would for any important meeting.

  3. Celebrate Success: Each time I stick to my plan, I’ll reward myself with a star on my calendar. This simple visual tool will motivate me and reinforce my commitment to my intentions.

By establishing these strategies, I aim to create habits that will reinforce my dedication. The joy I feel from creative expression adds an extra layer of motivation.

The Family Connection

Participating in our theme word tradition goes beyond personal growth; it fosters connection. We hold regular check-ins, every couple of weeks to share our updates on life and acknowledge the small steps toward bigger yearly goals. These meetings serve as important opportunities to celebrate achievements and renew plans as needed. Having a supportive family network enhances our chances of sticking to our intentions.

This shared journey creates excitement, knowing we support one another. Our connections remind us of the power of teamwork in pursuit of our ambitions.

The Importance of Community Support

In a world where loneliness is common, a support system can be transformative. The encouragement we draw from family can lift our spirits during challenging times. Research indicates that sharing goals with others increases the likelihood of achieving them by up to 65%.

When we express our intentions, it strengthens our commitment. It's one thing to write down goals alone; sharing them with a supportive group takes it to another level.

Reflecting on the Journey

Revisiting our goals throughout the year helps us remain focused on our theme word. Reflection is vital for personal growth. Checking in allows us to evaluate what strategies are effective and what requires change.

Self-reflection also deepens our understanding of our desires. It's not merely about setting goals once a year; it's about engaging in ongoing conversations about our priorities and adapting as life evolves.

The Power of Belief

Believing we can achieve more than we think possible is a key part of our journey. This aligns beautifully with the message from Ephesians 3:20, which reminds us that our potential is limitless when we align our actions with our intentions.

This year, we commit to not only our individual paths but also to the understanding that we are stronger together. By using the pitfall plan to navigate any setbacks, we each contribute to a shared family story of success.

Embracing the Adventure Ahead

As this new year progresses, our journey involves not only setting goals but also savoring the adventure that comes with them. The pitfall plan empowers us to achieve our intentions while maintaining hope and commitment.

By identifying potential pitfalls, we enable ourselves to face challenges head-on and stay focused on our journeys. As we gather with family, share our words, and explore our aspirations, we are reminded of our ability to reach new heights together.

Here’s to a year brimming with growth, creativity, and overcoming obstacles—one pitfall at a time!

Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! Ephesians 3:20 TPT
