Abby has said from the beginning, "I will not allow my medical issues to define me." Because of this, if you saw her you would not be able to tell how much she deals with. Abby’s medical journey started in March 2019 with a hard-to-treat sinus infection. In May 2019, she was diagnosed with pneumonia; by July, she was still dealing with a productive cough. Over the last four years Abby had three endoscopies, six bronchoscopies that all grew bacterial or fungal infections, and countless labs. She is supported by an amazing team of doctors in Austin, Houston, and Maryland.
While continuing to wait for a diagnosis, Abby’s team of doctors chose to focus on preventing lung infections by keeping her on multiple prophylactic medications and using an airway clearance vest twice per day.
Abby is a caring, sweet, funny, competitive, intelligent, and tough girl. She is excited for her senior year of high school and hopes to major in nursing after graduation. She is a competitive swimmer for her high school and club teams, and works hard to make straight A's in school while balancing competitive swimming and her medical issues. When Abby isn't at the pool or studying, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, watching Psych with her sister, and spending time with her family.
