Mr. Burgdorf is Special Counsel with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in Austin. His practice is multi-faceted industry corporate and securities work in the biotech, life sciences and technology industries and a variety of transactional work in the education sector. He was formerly the Chief Operating Officer of Remeditex Ventures; a venture capital fund focused exclusively on the development of early stage biomedical science which promises to address major disease and healthcare burdens in today’s society. He joined Remeditex in 2015 after serving as the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of VuCOMP, Inc., a breast cancer detection software company, while also maintaining a corporate legal practice as a shareholder at the law firm of Beatty, Bangle and Strama. Prior to that, he was the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of The University of Texas System (2005-2013) managing the legal affairs of the 14 institution UT System as well as 7 other functions ranging from compliance and IT security to real estate. Before assuming his duties at UT System, Mr. Burgdorf was a partner at the law firm of Vinson & Elkins (1998-2005), General Counsel of Samsung Austin Semiconductor (1996-1998) and an associate at Vinson & Elkins (1990-1996). Throughout his career he has served as a technical, legal and finance adviser to numerous Austin technology startups and growth companies.

Mr. Burgdorf graduated from The University of Texas with BBA in Finance and International Business (1985), Southern Methodist University with an MBA (1986) and The University of Texas with a J.D with honors (1990) and was an associate editor of the Texas Law Review.

His community involvement and leadership in Austin has spanned over 25 years and has been focused on children and young adults, education and healthcare. From 2006-2015 he served on the Board of Regents for Concordia University – Texas culminating his tenure there as Vice Chairman in 2014-2015. He now teaches classes there in Entrepreneurship and Business Law as adjunct faculty. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for The American Heart Association – Austin Chapter from 2013-2015 and served as Chair of the AHA Austin gala in 2012. He also served on the Lifeworks Board of Governors from 2003-2010 and was a member of the Executive Committee from 2004-2010 and finally Chaired the Board in 2005-2006. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Leadership Austin (2006-2007) and the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Austin Chapter (1998-2000).

Professionally, Mr. Burgdorf was a Founding Master in the Austin IP Inn of Court and an active member from 2010 to 2015, is a member of the American Law Institute, was a member of the Leadership Austin Class of 2002-2003. He is a recipient of the Magna Stella Award of The General Counsel Forum for outstanding leadership and management (2011) and Nightingale’s Healthcare Outstanding General Counsel (2006) as well as being elected a Texas Super Lawyer in corporate finance in 2003 and 2004. He is also an active member of his church, Bethany Lutheran, serving on the Board of Elders since 1997 and as the congregation’s president from 2004-2009.

He has been married to his wife Jayna for 28 years and together they have 3 children. Barry is an avid runner, skier, mountain hiker and overall sports enthusiast. He has a mostly healthy obsession with all things Texas Longhorn. When not exercising, he enjoys exercising his mind by reading world history (especially civil war era and WW II non-fiction) interspersed with a good dose of post-apocalyptic zombie books. He and Jayna enjoy cooking, wine and travel together.
